Hot Chrome Diesel Exhaust Pipe Protection

I am purchasing a Hitch Mount Splash Guard that stretches across the rear of my motorhome to protect against rock chips hitting the front of my tow car. I understand that brushes will come in contact with my tail pipe, especially when going around a turn. I am looking for a product that can temporally be mounted over my chrome exhaust when pulling my tow vehicle to prevent this. I would like to be able to take it off when not towing, so a heat resistant tape probably wouldn't work as it would damage the chrome. Thank you.

  • Transwest in Grand Junction Colorado a reputable Newmar Dealer, recommends these rubber “hula skirts” as a method to keep the rock chips at bay, mounted on the hitch.

    Two suggestions

One as noted the Hula Skirt will not do much to protect the towed. IN FACT it may have just the opposite effect and throw rocks up.

Now Think like either a Furnace/fireplace installer or a motorcycilist.

If you are installing say a Pot Bellied Stove in a house. the pipe inside the hose is single wall but once it hits the ceiling there is a Triple wall pipe. A pipe inside a larger pipe inside a still larger pipe with the occasional spacer to insure they do not touch each other.. Air flow between the pipes is sufficent to keep 'er cool

Motorcycles have a "Guard" chrome plated and perforated around the exposed side of the exhaust pipe.
  • Mine’s a 2004 (pre DEF) but my first stop looking for solutions will be Cummins. Thanks!
  • Some exhaust tips are designed for proper flow. Adding anything to the tips may cause interference with the intent, especially if your rig uses DEF, and has a re-gen system. Check with the mgr before doing anything.
  • You may find a Larger diameter pipe that will fit over it allowing a gap for air to flow thus keeping the outer pipe cool. I have seen them. Look at a Peterbilt next to the cab. You just need a short piece. Buy stainless not chrome.

    Here is a small one

The hula skirt brushes will do little to protect the toad. The diesel exhaust during a regen is about 1200 degrees F, so if you are still considering putting something on it, beware of the extreme temp. .
  • Everyone I've seen, they cut the bristles around the pipe or the rubber flap.
