Hot Water Heater

Hi, my hot water heater has a on/off switch on the back under the sink and there's also a switch and outlet beside the sink. I was just wondering what these switches do. Thanks, Ken

  • When we need hot water we turn on both switches. In 10 minutes or less we have hot water. We normally have the water heater off.
  • One switch is on top of cover on back of water heater tank.........that one is to turn electric heat element ON/OFF

The switch and outlet by kitchen sink.........what do you mean by outlet?
Outlet like a regular 120V AC plug?
Outlet like a 12V DC plug?

Switch could be for water heater 'propane' ON/OFF

    More info would help.

Sounds like you have an Atwood water heater.....switch on back of water heater and it must be 2003 or earlier model.
The propane..does it use pilot flame or does it have ignitor.
    Model #?

One thing for sure....make sure water is in water heater prior to turning switches ON.
Electric element will burn out within minutes. Propane will heat empty tank.
  • Hot water heater, front grille, front windshield, income coming in, GPS system, ATM machine..etc. Humor is how we cope with this.

I believe hardware stores sell water heaters.

One switch might be for gas operation, and the other for electric.

And for Effy: My water heater does indeed "heat hot water". When the water temperature drops to about 120 deg F, still pretty hot, it kicks on and heats it up to about 140 deg F. Doesn't yours do pretty much the same thing???

You must have left your sense of humor in your other pants.

Not really, but those silly "hot water heater" comments seem to appear every time someone uses the term, and it really gets old after awhile. Especially when it detracts from giving the OP useful answers.

Obvious now - you don't have a sense of humor.

  • LOL @ HOT water HEATER...Dennis

Those switches, most likely, operate the WATER HEATER, (notice I left off the HOT) on electric or propane. Flip the switch ON water is heated electrically. Flip it OFF it's heated with propane.....Dennis

Why do you need to heat hot water?

    Sorry I couldn't resist. :B
