The answer (Which does not help at all) Is kind of "All of the above are correct"

    Some Propane only
Some Electric (usually this is a dual power with a problem)
Mine,, Both AC or Gas or BOTH at the same time

When you go shopping.. ASK.. There are two major water heater makers they both make Propane only and Propane/Electric models.

However the means for choosing the power source vary from model to model.
  • My water heater was propane only, but it was easy to add a kit with an electric heating element. You just replace the drain plug with the electric heating element. Then you can switch between propane, electric or both.

The electric heating element is only 400 watts so it's slow to recover, but it keeps the water hot using campground electricity.
  • And some come with tankless on-demand water heaters. We have the Progressive Temp system. It only uses propane, but only when using hot water. Extremely efficient with propane and quiet. The best part is unlimited hot water. I really enjoy taking a 30 minute shower. We can use the washing machine, have the dishwasher on and take a shower at the same time and never run out of hot water.

A friend of ours also has a Phaeton with the tankless on-demand system. He uses hot water to fill the inflatable kiddie pool for his grand kids and doesn't run out of hot water.

OK never is a strong word. As long as we have water and propane we will have unlimited hot water.
  • Water heaters come in several configurations and sizes in trailers & MHS

Some are propane only, some propane/electric, some heat exchanger/propane/electric and in 6, 10, 12 gallon sizes and some in 6 gallon with 9 gallon rating or 10 gallon with a 16 gallon rating.

Just need to check which one is installed prior to purchase.

But it wouldn't be a deal breaker one way or other.
Can always be changed out if needed.
  • The very nicest water heater may use the engine coolant in a heating loop. They can also be electric, propane, and diesel.

If the class A has a gas engine then the choice would be engine coolant, electric, and propane.
  • Depends on the WH model. The more expensive one run on both where as the lower end models only run on PP.
  • Mine has an electric element that is good for washing hands, dishes and light use. As your use increases the Hydrohot fires up and uses diesel from my main tank to keep water hot as long as you have water and diesel. They make Aquahot now and other types of the same style. Aquahot is the most popular I think but not sure. Propane is only used for reefer and stove top.
  • Most coaches have the water heaters that can use both, but their are some that will only use either electric or propane only. So you got to ask if you do not know.
