How AC venting works?

More of a curiosity than issue. I have been using my ac a bit lately and have been playing with opening the vents of the main register instead of closing them and relying on the smaller vents spread throughout the lounge. I have two ac units so getting the cooling to the bedroom is not an issue. It seems with all the vents on main exhaust open I still get cooling from smaller vents. It cools so much better with all vents open. Is the only reason for closing these main vents noise? I honestly don't know how these vents are intended to work so any advice would be nice. In my older motorhomes the ceiling vents were not available so the main was only option.

  • The ceiling vents in our Monaco are a double H with both AC's providing air to the 2 ducts that run the length of the coach.

If we leave the main vent in either or each A/C unit open, we get a lot of air and a lot of noise.

Close the main vent air is forced thru the ducting. This reduces the air flow, but vastly reduces the noise.

If we want to cool down the coach fast, we turn on both ac's and open the main vents.

If we want to sleep in the quiet, we turn on the front ac only, and close the main vent. this forces the cool air into the ducts, and plenty makes it back to the bedroom.

This arrangement is of course infinitely adjustable.
When watching movies up front, using only the rear air along with the roof ducts works good too.

We also open the grill for initial cooling and then close it to divert the A/C or heat through the vents. Really cuts down on the noise level.

    That's a great idea!

  • Ceiling grill with vents are called 'chill grill'
The vents are directly connected to A/C unit discharge air plenum so air flow from vents is the coolest air......blows straight down into rig (and air flows out of plenum down thru ducts/registers in ceiling).

With chill grill vents open more fan blower noise and air flow noise can be heard.

Only time we use 'chill grill vents' is upon initial cool down when just setting up rv after travel day and rig is hot.
After that......they get closed due to noise. Makes my ears hurt :B
