How can I remove the protective film from front of RV

The front of my Bounder has a protective film over the engine access panel. It is covered with stains from bugs and looks terrible. How can I clean it or remove it?

  • The majority of folks that write about mold on this product are in the southern states. It's probably best not to have it installed in that high humidity climate.

Ours was on our motorhome 8 years without any mold but we mainly traveled in the western states. We also kept it clean, removed bugs after a day's drive, and protected it with a wipe of 303 solution after cleaning. It looked brand new after 8 years and protected the front end very well. We also had it installed around the key opening on the door - no paint scratches there.

Park it where the sun will heat the front and pull the film off by hand. Go slowly to keep the film from tearing.

Did the front of my Newmar using that method.

Good luck on that idea.I watched a guy on a 2001 Monaco parked fully in the SC sun at 100+ degrees and he had to use a steam gun and even then it took a whole day
  • Thanks for the tips. I suspected that I would have to use heat and a lot of work, but hoped for an easy fix. Oh well maybe next time.

  • We had one of those films on our Navion when we bought it used from RV World (Nokomis, FL location) and put it on the dealer-will-fix list because it had partially peeled off and we wanted it removed. (They did it, along with all other promised fixes. Very satisfied with their sales and service folks.)

Glad we did after reading this post! Wish I could tell you what they used to get it off, but sounds like good suggestions above.
  • Use a wall paper steamer to warm the film ( to hot and you will lift the paint from under the film, to cold and it doesn't want to come off). I also use plastic razor blades sold by (Auto Geek) get the pink ones, to remove the film about 1/4" strips at a time. Once the film is off the next pain in the neck is removing the adhesive. Do about one square foot at a time then remove the adhesive. If let set to long the adhesive will harden. The best product I have found yet and believe me I have tried many, is a product called "Orange Squeeze" made by California Scents. It can be purchased a Lowes, and yes it is a air freshener but it is 100% citrus extract and when sprayed on leave sit for 1 minute then scrape off with razor blade, about 90% of the adhesive will come off the first time. Reapply again to remove the rest.
Good luck and hope you have a lot of patients as this is a very labor intensive job and could take as long as 40 to 60 man hours depending on how old it is. PM me if I acn be of any further assistance; Keith

apparently a steam gun is the trick to removel but still a long tedious job.A steam gun I believe is used for wall paper removal
