In my (humble) opinion here's the 4X4 camping setup that you want - will go almost anywhere and let you camp there in complete comfort. Small enough to run around in too, exploring, sight-seeing, and shopping for camping supplies ... no toad needed: http://www.tigervehicles.com/tiger-models/
Thanks for this, pnichols!
How common are 4x4 Class C's? They aren't. Be ready to attract attention, although I often find that curious folks are attracted to the nice-looking small-sized rig and don't even realize it's a 4x4.
I'm on my 2nd small 4x4 Class C. 15 years with a tiny Toyota that the first owner had custom built - overloaded, but it would go anywhere. 12 years with my Tiger - build at the Tiger factory on a Chevy 2500HD chassis. These vehicles fit into a single parking space, which makes in-town excursions easier. They can go a long way out into the boonies, not into serious Jeeping country unless modified, but I have had no problems with angle of departure and such.
Size matters. What good is 4WD if the rig itself won't fit down the narrow USFS road or under the trees or wherever? My Tiger is 87 inches wide. Most TC's and Class C's are much wider.
Used Tigers are scarce and usually sell quickly. The factory has a couple of used ones available right now.
