How Did You Get Started RVing

Aunt & Uncle had a TT and the cousins used to invite us along occasionally. After we emigrated from the UK, we decided to try the hobby. Unfortunately we got a real turkey, an '85 Class C (26') with a carburated Ford 460. 6 mpg at sea level and 4.5 at altitude. Interior layout was bad too, aft/side bathroom with a standard size double bed in the back and a sleeper sofa. Sold after one season, then got a 2002 32' Class A with the V-10 a few years later.

We finally gave up the lifestyle after four years with the Class A. Lost a bunch of cash as a result of a very dodgy consignment deal, but in general, we're happy to have had the adventures but not sorry to have given it up.

When you have to dip into your IRA every time you use something, it's a sign you shouldn't be doing it!

Now my husband does not enjoy camping so I have a small teardrop and loving it.

I started in tents in 1963 with my rents and sibs, loaded in a 63 Rambler American wagon. We went around Gaspe and back through Ontario and New York, Vermont, NH, and Maine. Sleeping bags were in war surplus duffels on the roof rack. As the years went on we camped every summer and in 1970 went around Britain for three weeks in a rented Bedford van with Mom driving most of it as Dad was tied up with attending conferences in Aberdeen and London. Later on they had a Datsun pickup with a truck camper which I inherited when they stopped using it.....my employer in the mid-80's gave me a lake lot to use and I mounted the camper there on a frame for weekends.
Meanwhile my DW's family had a pop-up they pulled behind their VW Beetle. After we married in 74 we had apup tent for a few years then a series of low cost tents until we rented a pop-up in the early nineties. After that we bought one and whenit rotted out we went back to the drawing board. After we got into going south in our motel's off-season we had our motorhomes as well as a number of rented condo's and a double-wide in Florida we owned for two years.I had a small bleed in the brain this fall so if we get anther it will be to park in a rv park as DW doesn't feel safe with me driving anymore...

1966 US Navy. Every time we got transfered it was coast to coast. We decided to make our next transfer a Vacation trip. Bought our 1st., 19 Ft. Prowler, travel trailer in 1971 and 1st RV trip Norfolk, Va. to San Diego. Been doin it ever since. Retired after 30 years service.:)

Tent camped at a young age, then back packed in my late teens and early 20's. After having kids and getting wet one too many times in a tent, bought a pop up, then a Hybrid, then a 5th wheel and now in a Class A.
We're 17 years out of the tent, and have no regrets.

I started with Boy Scouts, and then when me and my bestie fiend starting mountain biking his grandfather would bring their fifth wheel to Vermont and New Hampshire and let us go for the day.
I enjoyed it so much, that once my wife and I started a family we decided we should start camping. So we did. She had only don camping at her summer camps and never done any RVing.
Now our kids love it and the wife does too.
Such an enjoyable life style

Started in tents then a class C, at age 59 bought 1st class A because we wanted to take dogs w/us when traveling and have stayed w/ MH ever since. Stopped flying in airplanes in 2000 and love Motorhoming around the US of A.

When my youngest son turned 3 I bought a 8 man Hillary cottage tent, screen house and all the accessories needed and we began camping. Florida, Tn and all around especially the Outer Banks. We progressed from tent to tag alongs, fifth wheels, and now a Class A for the DW, our fur babies to enjoy. The camping life style resonated with at least one of our sons and he now has a 36 foot tag along.

I've just pretty well always done some form of camping or another.

I grew up tent, then trailer, then motor home camping. Been RVing all my life. When I was a kid, my folks started out with a travel trailer that we towed behind the "family truckster" (station wagons). We traveled all over the western US staying in state and national parks and commercial campgrounds. The summer that I graduated from high school, my folks got a 28' Explorer motorhome and the adventures continued. After a couple of summers, they went back to travel trailers.

For many years we used my folk's travel trailers till they sold them (plural). They kept one in a site on the coast and one at home for use on the road. At one point they also had a Coleman tent trailer. After they got rid of their trailers, we missed having a way to take the dogs on trips with us and bought our first Motor Home (on our second).

Our first motorhome, bought in 2007, was a 2005 Coachmen Freelander 3150SS (Class-C). With its limited cargo carrying capacity, I got tired of counting every pound we put in it and decided our lifestyle and hobbies demanded a Class-A so we got our current 30' Winnebago.

We really can't do without one since our RV is also our "mobile observatory" at remote dark sky sites and "Star Parties". I added Red LED "marine fixtures" to both the old and new ones to preserve night adapted vision. I use two portable (not attached to the coach) solar power systems. One (120w) to support/recharge our astronomy equipment, the other (270w) to supply/recharge coach power when boondocking.
