On my Dutch Star/Spartan with the 350 ICS Cummins/1050 lbs of torque, all gear ratios are very well matched power-to-weight wise. I use a max-acceleration technique for joining freeway traffic, then I end up setting the cruise control on 67 mph. This gives me an engine speed of 150 to 200 rpm above max torque. I do not cruise with the engine brake armed. In event of a front tire blowout,.....I always try to stay "spring-loaded" to firmly steer as necessary to stay in my lane (NOT Touching the brake pedal, and leaving it in cruise control). I figure I can do it in 1 to 2 seconds. For me, it's more intuitive than any other technique. To me, leaving the pavement BEFORE you are ready MEANS the driver lost control.
OK, so it's more than you wanted to hear,....what can I say....
