The curve is replicated on many studies and while there is some pollution as you mention, it is all about the differential speed and not about lane choice.
True - I do the middle lane when traveling through congested areas where there is lots of on/off traffic. I wonder if there has been a lane choice study?
Thankfully I travel mostly rural parts of the interstate so there's not a lot of potential for interference.
