I close the faucet, let the regulator build pressure, then open them. Repeat several times with hot and cold on each faucet. The sudden release in pressure causes water to come rushing out.
I close my pool using this method too and it seems to be effective. The only time I had a line freeze was when I paid a "professional" to do it. They had to tear up the concrete patio to repair it.
I never rely on just air anyway so it's not a critical step. The only reason I do it is so it makes less of a mess when running antifreeze through it. For the 10 minutes and the ease it takes and the cost of 2 gal of antifreeze, I really can't imagine not using antifreeze. It's so easy.
