It took me about 1,500 miles before I said to my wife "I finally have a comfortable feeling of where I am in the lane without checking the side mirrors."
I tend to visualize my right foot in the center of the lane. It's also a good guide for centering yourself without looking in the side mirrors in tight situations, like passing trucks, and narrow bridges when you should be focused on the road ahead.
