I'm of the rare breed of camper that doesn't like to disturb his neighbors. Odd, I know.
I don't mind using the noisy thing at rest stops or parking lots, or out away from people. It's a bit much when in a campground or in close quarters. This last weekend, I tried to listen for other campers using their generators and run during the times they did. So for the hour I needed to charge batteries, it would be the minimum bother since others were already making noise.
I think for those times I only need power for battery charging, I'm going to carry my Yamaha 1000 - it's around 50 db, so not so bad to deal with. If I know I'll have sun, then I'll just carry my portable solar panel and not a generator.
