"LP gas" can be either propane or butane. Propane is more common as it boils at a lower temperature (-43 degrees F) than butane so is good for heating in cold climates. Your son may have had experience with butane which WILL leave you cold if the outside temp falls below it's boiling point (30 degrees F). I seriously doubt you will want to be camping in an area too cold for propane to boil.
