This topic comes up a lot on here and you usually get polar opposite replies. I've done the route quite a few times and have no problem with it and I'd do it again any day in my 35' MH with my Dodge Dakota toad. So I guess it's all up to how comfortable you are driving your motorhome. If you're afraid of heights don't do it.
Personally when I do Highway 1 I always like going Southbound on it. The reason being most of your pull outs are going to be on the ocean side and you won't have to be walking across the road to get better views. There are plenty of pull outs along the road.
I probably would not do Highway 1 on a summer weekend, only because there is a lot of traffic on the weekends. It lightens up when you get past Big Sur.
