AROUND New Orleans via I-12 is the way to go. A better, smoother road....but of course it dumps you back on I-10 at either end.
Last time I went cross country on I-10, La. most likely had the worst surfaces.
Parts of I-20 (around Atlanta, Ga., if I remember correctly) weren't too good, either. What really surprised me, last time, was the incredible construction going on around San Antonio, Tx.. Really had to watch things carefully. But all that is part of the travel thing. So...grin and bear it, I guess.
