My dad once took his car to the shop because he kept hearing this faint beep supposedly from under his dash.
The mechanic looked puzzled but searched under the dash to no avail. He had just begin to tell him that he could not even imagine anything that could be beeping under the dash and then "beep" ?? He opened up the glove box and there layed my dads cell phone "low battery".
My dad, very embarrassed, says, what do I owe you? His mechanic shook his head and said, see ya next time !
I know this is of no help what so ever, just threw this out because sometimes it's the simplest things that can throw us into looking for something complicated. Hope you find your annoyance soon and get back with us to let us know.
The only thing I can think of other than the smoke alarm is the propane sensor near the floor usually.
