I started a new Facebook group

As far as the forum rules go, it would only be a problem if the op continued to make posts about his site, group, etc. in other posts.
If you think a post about a new FB group is going to take RVers away from this site, then maybe we all need to go a step further to make this place a more friendly place to hang out. jmo

I don't get the complaints about lack of / diminished activity on the B forum of rv dot net and simultaneously promoting a new B group at another venue.

In terms of netiquette, it's considered extremely rude to "poach" from one site in order to promote attendance on ones own or another site of like kind.

I'm old, of course not as old as Davydd, :B and I have been on FB for many years.
It seems most of the people here who knock FB have never used it, mostly crotchety old people. :)

It is mostly older folks on Facebook from my viewpoint. The only content I see is that of my family and friends of choosing and in the groups I have joined which are only of my interest. Type B owners are an older folks majority under that scenario. Everyone sees only what they want to see on Facebook and vice versa what you want others to see from you. You can unfriend anyone you might object to or you can simply keep them as a friend and check a box that you don't want to see their postings. Trust me. There are a lot of old folks on Facebook. Heck, I have reconnected with my many first cousins, aunts and uncles of who many I haven't seen for over 50 years. We all enjoy following each other especially our children, grandchildren and younger cousins we never knew we had.

When I started the Group, it was public. I thought that was fine, but every single post I made went to every Friend in my list, and I assumed the same was true of every member. So I decided to make the group a closed group for that reason.

Also, if we are going to put interesting content in there - pictures, manual files and cool discussions, I think the least we can ask is people join and participate, not just lurk anonymously.

There is no money to be made. You don't profit from Facebook groups as far as I can tell. And I've committed to not boot people unless the offense is serious. There will be little to no moderation as well.

The only thing I've asked the members is to keep it to B's. Not B+ or C. I hope our discussion to be focused on B vans, mods, accessories and travels. So far it's been great and the group is very active and friendly.

Even an open Facebook group is subject to administrator approval to join. Friends can invite new members without administrator approval whether the group is open or closed. However, an administrator can boot anyone at will. In the group I administrate I ignore many people daily as I can spot them to determine if they are real people or not. Every once in a while I get fooled and have to delete a message selling sunglasses, cheap watches or something. Also, a spammer doesn't get a second chance or warning.

Many forums have safeguards to keep fake people out. However, I am a member of some message board forums similar to RV.net that seemingly have an automated approval process because if I sign on in the wee hours of the morning I might see a dozen spam messages that some admin has to go in and delete almost on a daily basis. RV.net either has good safeguards or on top of it admins because I can't recall much if any spam here.

I think it is wise to have a closed group with approval. It keeps the sunglasses spammers and trolls at bay.

So why did you make it a closed group requiring your approval to join?

Being a closed group the posts are not shared with your friends that have no interest in class B's.

I understand that but ... oh well, whatever. In the end it seems like it would have been a lot more useful to just create a Yahoo Group which supports both type of groups. Then again there are already a number of Class B groups there. Then there's RV Village where you can do pretty much the same thing with the added benefit that all the groups there are more or less RV related.
