As an owner of a "classic" RV, I can tell you that 16.5" tires are a non-issue. I just purchased four RADIAL tires this spring for around $600. If you're worried about the rims, bias-ply tires are also still available. As far as MPG, I don't know what a slightly newer rig will get, but I'm averaging 9.5 MPG over about 1000 miles of varying road conditions.
