Just before a long trip I go to walmart and buy the smallest box of ridex, a gallon of vinegar. Split both between my three tanks; black, bathroom & kitchen. Leave in as long as possible, usually until I get to my final campground; then drain.
This cleans up the tanks pretty well, and my sensors all start working properly again. Course the sensors, especially the kitchen foul again pretty quickly.
The ridex is a no-brainer, but I think the vinegar really helps because most of our campgrounds seem to be in hard water country. The combo seems to eat away the crud pretty well.
