I'd like some clarity on the California towing speed limit

I just got to California yesterday and noticed the signs that said vehicles towing trailers are limited to 55 mph. I wasn't sure if that applied to me towing my toad (not a trailer) but I slowed down...

The happiest, longest and slowest day of my life was the day I left California with my trailer in tow. Never been to happy to reach the Oregon boarder in my life. Doing 55 once you pass Sacramento heading is beyond ridiculous, I was more of a hazard at 55. But oh well I did it, and didn't care as people passed me giving me the one finger salute.
