I'd like some clarity on the California towing speed limit

I just got to California yesterday and noticed the signs that said vehicles towing trailers are limited to 55 mph. I wasn't sure if that applied to me towing my toad (not a trailer) but I slowed down...

Wow!
Four pages of discussion over such a simple thing.
In all my visits to CA, I immediately understood that the law requires that when you are towing ANYTHING, your speed limit is 55 MPH.
But then, I can understand that some people are referring to some "List Of Towing Laws" that they found on the internet. The ones that are so often WRONG about so many things! Especially about Montana laws!
