We have had rats chew up wires and make nests out of insulation under the hood in about 5 vehicles over the years. Used bait boxes for awhile. Didn't really do the job. Got to thinking that maybe the bait actually attracts more rats to our property. We also have an ultrasonic thing that doesn't keep them away.
We leave a car in our carport when we are gone on trips in the RV. Rats seem to like dark warm places. I placed a shoplight under the hood. Just lifted up the hood a few inches (held up with a piece of wood) and positioned the shoplight under there, on a timer to be on during darkness. Put another shoplight on the ground under the rear of the car facing up. Haven't had a problem with rats since doing this.
