Storing any engine, large or small, gas or diesel, has some caveats. They all do benefit from being run every 4-6 weeks, but only if you can run them enough to make sure everything got up to proper operating temperature. This so that the moisture created burning some fuel gets baked out of everything, including the exhaust system/tailpipe. Otherwise you encourage rust. The purpose in running them is to re-oil all the surfaces that need oil so they don't rust, and to make sure the fuel system doesn't dry out and either rust or clog with varnish.
It must be noted that diesels do not warm up fully while idling. They are just enough more efficient than gas engines to make running under load necessary to warm up fully. So if you have a diesel rig, you would have to take it out on the road for a few miles. Which is actually not a bad idea even with a gas engine, as making the tires roll and warm up to prevent flat spots, is also a good idea.
