Initial run with our 2012 Nexus Phantom 23P

Planning for several long trips pushed us towards moving to a Class C from our 22' TT. "We" consist of my bride, da pooch and I. We are not big people at 5' 1" and 5' 9" and having been boaters for 35 + years we definitely fall into the "Minimalists" side of the RV equation. We wanted a high quality albeit somewhat smaller Class C, our limit was nothing over 25' and at 24' 10" the Phantom fit like a glove.

A Forum member on another thread turned me on to the Nexus line and I will be forever grateful. The quality of their product is truly amazing. Framed in steel instead of aluminum, one piece solid fiberglass roof with one piece end caps front and rear, heated tanks, top of the line appliances and the cabinetry has to be seen to be appreciated.

I have always been a fan of the Ford E-350 Chassis with its beast, the 6.8L V-10 married to a 5 speed OD transmission with full Tow Haul Mode. Dropped into one of the smaller Class C's it provides amazing performance. We cruise at 60 mph and up and down the rather serious mountains of central Arizona and managed 10.2 mpg on our very first trip(and I think I can do better). Ten to twelve mile 6 to 8% grades were almost boring. Drop it into the tow/haul mode and slide down the grade at 55, never touch the brake pedal or burn a drop of fuel. Coming up that same 12 miler outside of Winkleman was at 55 to 60 between 3200 - 4500 rpm, less roar than my old reliable 5.4L and smooooth as silk.

Everywhere you look the Phantom shouts quality. Michelin LTX MS 2 LT tires, heated tanks, Electric awning, Home sized Microwave and three bunks you will be happy to slide into for a great nights sleep. The Short Queen is 8" thick of quality innerspring mattress. The cabover bunk and dinette also bring comfort to all ages and or sizes. We will be using the Cabover for a reading/TV lounge and only the occasional guest. The dinette is the largest I've seen on any RV under 40' and its faux leather is awesome.

How happy are we? I was negotiating with the folks at Nexus for a brand new one, almost got on the jet to Elkhart to pick it up when this baby leaped out at me from the internet.

2012 with 6,000 miles, 8.8 hours on the 4Kw Genset, yep... your basic mint condition. Damned if it hadn't just come in on a trade right here in Tucson, as part of their philanthropical outreach program I persuaded La Mesa RV to give me the full $8K I wanted for my trailer and the deal was done. :B

The closest we have come to any sort of a problem are the various rattling noises that we are silencing one at a time with towels and careful reloading. We never really considered a motorhome but mama I am home! :B A special thank you to one and all of you who contributed your knowledge and experience and help to make this day possible. Whoooo Hoo!
  • Not prying, but within a few thousand $, what should a newbie consider to be a fair price for a 23' Nexus and Coachman, as described above?

Any knowledge as to how those prices compare w/ similar Sprinter Cs, Phoenix, and maybe a closely matched Born Free.
  • Gorgeous rig! And congrats on finding a brand new "used" version of what you wanted! What great luck!

I'm only a little jealous ;) Hubby and I just bought the same floorplan in a Coachmen version. I'd definitely like to have the upgraded features and quality of the Nexus, but I can't complain too much at the price point of the Coachment. We LOVE the floorplan, and the giant storage compartment. We managed to sqeeze 4 into ours happily (mom, dad, a 3 year old and a 7 year old..I know we may outgrow it as the kids get bigger but dad is the biggest at 5'10" so I'm betting we can keep piling in for a long time).

The best part is I've got every free weekend for the forseeable future booked with either camping or day trips. I can't wait to take this thing everywhere...campgrounds I was afraid to try in our 40' DP or the 35' 5th wheel, day trips to amusement parks or the beach. Such a versatile and easy to drive unit. I never would have described myself as a minimalist, but of the 3 RVs we've had, this has the fewest amenities and features but is by far the best fit. Glad you love yours too! :D
  • Sounds like you got the rig you like. Like the size. Good luck on your travels..

    From a couple old boaters..
  • Very nice to read. We go to Elkhart every year or so, and will have to go check them out. Your MPG is good too, considering the cabover section is pretty big.
