It depends on where your condensing coils are located. If they are on the back then yes you need the roof vent to let the hot air out or 2" at the top. On this refrigerator the coils are at the bottom and I have decided to leave the outside vent open in the summertime to let the 90° air out. I'll probably close it in the winter so the heat stays inside. The refer blocks the roof vent opening so it is only 1 inch deep by 30 inches wide and I'll probably leave it open that small amount.
