Insurance Recommendation

Just got my insurance bill for the next year and have a $568 increase ! Called National Interstate and they advised that they had just decided "they needed to raise the rates in Texas". We have had them for 10 years with no claims. SO....I'm shopping around today. I have USAA for autos. They do not handle RVs..but instead automatically transfer you to Progressive. Anyone have any experience with Progressive RV insurance. I heard that they quote low , then raise your rates pretty regularly. Any advice on that issue. Anyone have experience with Good Sams or other insurers that I can call ? Thanks.

  • I have Progressive and I've never made a claim, but my rates were going up annually until I figured out why. If you insure a new motorhome with Progressive they will guarantee that if you have a total loss in the first five years they will replace your motorhome with an equivalent current model year motorhome. After five years, they will pay up to the purchase price of your current motorhome in the event of a total loss. Sounds like a great deal, but that coverage cost money.

I just discovered this when going through my insurance documents. My 10 year old motorhome was insured for the amount I paid for it 10 years ago if it were to be totaled. This is a great deal if your motorhome gets totaled, but not so great if it doesn't. I contacted Progressive and they worked with me on it as the next issue was I owed more on the motorhome than it's worth. So at first they told me I had to either keep what I had, or change it to actual cash value. I didn't want to do that because that meant if it was totaled I'd still owe the bank money. But the guy at Progressive I spoke with said he would check with underwriting and get back to me. They got back to me within a week and agreed to lower my coverage to the current loan balance. That cut the premium almost in half. I'm paying this year exactly what I paid for insurance 10 years ago on it. If it gets totaled they'll pay off the loan and I can walk away from it.
  • Just a thought - why do insurance rate go up each year? The RV has depreciated.
  • Stay away from Blue Sky, they are a bait and switch company, went with them last year after progressive raised their rate. Renewal next month and policy went up almost
100%. No claims ever and $1000.00 deductibles . Called and they said they had a rate increase this year and are only passing it on. Talked to fellow coach owner who I said to get Blue sky when his rates went up. He got the same rate I got last year (same coverage) within $50.00 within the last 45 days. So it's only when you renew that they hit you,if your a first timer with them you get the cheap rate.my rate went from $1100 to
    $1900 plus. Unbelievable !
  • We too have had excellent service with Progressive. The rates have been reasonable and they paid off one claim for us too, that was my fault, and it did not affect our rates.

  • I went with Progressive many years ago and dont have any problem at all with them
  • We had one major claim with Progressive and our rates did not increase over normal yearly increase. They paid off well and fast. We are still with them.
  • Contact Miller Insurance in Oregon or another RV insurance specialist agent - they specialize in RV insurance, and write policies for almost every carrier and in every state. We have Progressive, and they do raise rates, but so far it's manageable. And every couple of years we ask Miller for a new round of quotes just to see our options. I'd cast a critical eye if looking at Good Sam - they hand off to GMAC, and they're not exactly inexpensive for fulltimers.

  • I went with GS insurance because they insure our mh as a home and not just as a vehicle which means everything in the mh is covered for replacement and if someone gets hurt in or around the mh we have liability coverage. In other words, they insure the RV as a house and not just a vehicle. It is more expensive than the AAA we had, but we are getting more coverage.
