- senfExplorerJust to be different, we use a 40 watt lamp with a tin can opened at both ends as a chimney above the lamp. The tin can chimney sits on three pieces of wire screwed into the the wooden base that the lamp socket is screwed into. The chimney causes a flow of heated air to circulate. All cupboard doors and drawers are left open, but the van is closed up. The 40 Watt lamp is plugged into a timer which comes on at night and shuts off at daylight.
There is never any mould on the inside, just on the outside of the RV. This method has been successful for us since 1996 and the cost is negligible. With the coming ban on incandescent lamps, I purchased 16 the other day, so we should be ok for about 32 more years. By that time we should be in a retirement home or pushing up the daisies. - Metaphor_7182Explorer~ Came across this info and swapped out the dehumidifier for a low wattage parabolic heater for the below freezing temps;
Operating Temperature
If the space being dehumidified has temperatures that typically fall below 65 degrees (F), you may want to consider buying a product that is specified for use at lower temperatures.

I too leave Fantastic fan open about an inch or so as I have a MaxxAir cover on top of Sprinter so no rain gets in.Snow is rare here. But I also air out the Sprinter and run it once a month if I am not on the road.No problems so far.
- GaryKHExplorerI live above you on Van. Island & i use an air dryer also. Works good (they use them on boats moored to the dock) Can be had at West Marine.

Using a dehumidifier is expensive and it will be frozen up most of the time with our temps unless you also heat. Also it just isn't that humid here - nothing like New Orleans! - gonetothedogs1ExplorerI live in soggy western Washington and for the past 2 years have used an Air-Dryr 1000 (Davis Industries) that I purchased through Amazon. I have had no moisture issues in my Roadtrek and it uses very little power.
- donn0128Explorer IIIn Gresham when we had our trailer at the house, well you can guess the temps. Left the dehumidifier on 24/7 with a hose running out a cracked window. Worked like a charm.
My small ones came from Compact Appliances, cost me 60 dollars each delivered to our park. Run off of 120VAC with a brick. Back says 2.5A@9volts. - dave17352ExplorerA real live dehumidifier would hardly run once you closed the rig up. There wouldn't be much moisture getting in. Would cost you hardly anything to run it. I was just looking at one that cost 160.00 dollars that will remove up to 30 pints of moisture a day. It will handle 2000 sq feet. I have used dehumidifiers for years. I am a drywall contractor and we will use them to dry out moist air on jobsites. They work incredible well.
- mlts22ExplorerIf you have power, get a dehumidifier.
If power is a no-go, buy some large containers of Damp-Rid, place them in five gallon buckets or tubs (the stuff is very caustic, so I like having additional protection), open all cabinets, and that should do the trick. - Metaphor_7182ExplorerThanks guys for the replies. Yes I have access to ac. I have a 800 watt parabolic heater inside on the mid setting, near the shower drain pointing to the rear. The WC, lower and upper doors are all open. Current exterior temp is 45F, but we had a cold snap a week back with several days in the low 20F's.
On that "At less than 60 dollars each they are doing a great job of holding the moisture down", any idea on operating temp for a dehumidifier? Are they the DC model? We are thinking (me anyway) :Wof doing a trial cold camping weekend,(RT was winterized last month.)and I would use it during the evenings while boon docking. Average temps until April hover between 30 to 48F here. Using the dehumidifier while parked on the apron by the house will be the majority of its day to day use.
