Should I also walk away if an otherwise promising unit has limited ceiling stains (for example, near skylight, wall or slide)?
If the seller allows it, you can also remove the inside skylight framing to get a really good look. I wrestled with a leaky skylight for years, but the water intrusion was minimal because I paid attention and always pulled the frame to dry it. I finally fixed it.
Now as for the smell, no way - I walk away from that.
