My great mechanic does the repairs and runs thru my pre-vacation check list (and oil change) before I head out. I have AAA which has been worth every penny with my 1996 RVan. I am not sure whether to trust everyone they recommend but when I lost my serpentine on the 75 in Florida they towed me to a place got me back on the road 5 hours later.
Something I discovered last winter was the mobile RV repair people. When my AC quit the campground people gave me a name, he was there in a couple hours, diagnosed the electrical short and fixed it.
I don't have a personal mechanic. Must find one. I wouldn't have thought of AAA. And a mobile RV repair? Wow! That would address a big fear of mine. We always go to "ghost towns," which is a bit of a misnomer since some people do still live there. But they may be off the beaten trail nonetheless. Breakdown? GULP! I could have a box of tools in the back but it wouldn't matter if I have no skills.
When I was a kid sometimes we'd get in the car and go 500 miles---without a cell phone or GPS. I'm not sure when I got so skittish.
