Have someone operate the switch while you stand outside and listen for the pulsing of the ignitor? In mine, the electric connection on the gas solenoid valve is loose. So the ignitor pulses but the heater doesn't turn on. I can get it to work once on site, but I need to either permanently fix what's there or replace the solenoid.

What does the solenoid valve look like?
The solenoid valve is connected to the gas input and looks like a cast piece with two cylinders on it about the size of a C battery. In general the function is as follows. When you click on the heater, the solenoids get voltage, open and let gas go through. The ignitor pops and lights the gas. If the thermister senses heat, the solenoids keep getting 12V and stay open. If it doesn't, then power to the heater is cutoff and the solenoids close, preventing a gas leak.
Keep in mind my water heater is the original American Appliances 6 gallon. If my solenoids just die, then I will have to buy a new heater as I cannot get spare parts.
