I agree - if you are smelling the propane, then you need to find the leak(s) and fix them asap. You don't want an open flame with a leak.
That was the first thing I did - check the propane lines. Saved me lots of trouble as there was a leak inside the heater which I wouldn't be using, but it would leak all the time.
The furnace should be low down by the floor.
