- Rog___NanExplorerDefinitely not a day trip from Miami to Key West. We spend a month in Marathon in the winter. It is a good 2 hours up to Miami from Marathon and it can take 2 hours to KW if traffic is heavy from Marathon. KW is very cool just to walk around the dock area alone let alone Duval and it's side streets. Also great eats can be had at BO'S near the docks. And remember if there should be an accident with a death involved any where in the Keys you can be stuck for several hours cause there is no other road in or out but hwy 1. You don't say what you're driving- an option is to drive to Marathon spend a couple nights in your unit at Knights Key CG at 7 mile bridge and drive dingy a couple times to KW to really enjoy KW. We really enjoy the keys a lot, hope you will also.
- IvylogExplorer IIIHaving grownup in SE Fla, Key West was never on my must do list and that was before the fruits and nuts took over. I would not do it on a weekend as the traffic is even worse. Marathon was always good enough for me as the USCG had cabins we could rent. I have been to K W twice... once by cruise ship and once I flew myself. DO NOT go the week before or after Daytona bike week unless you like the sound of loud straight pipes.
I would photo shop myself into the further most south photo above as you are looking at a very long day. Plenty of things of interest in the middle keys. - bobkatmsuExplorerIf you don't mind spending $$$$, Best Steak House on Caroline is phenomenal. As good a steak house as any I have been to through out the country. Suggest making reservations.

Headed to Key West for a day trip any suggestions of places to visit or restaurants. Thanks!
Just got back from a week down there, taking advantage of the off season prices, as well as getting the 7th day free.
Stayed at one of the finest parks in the country, most likely and although expensive, it is close to Key West at mile marker 14.5.
Not as close as Boyds on Stock Island, but there's no comparison with the facilities and especially with having the Tiki Huts at the...

By the way, there aren't any RV Parks on Key West, itself.
Certainly a long way from anywhere for a day trip and would never consider it, but if so going, then try and do Hemingway, the Museum, a drink at Sloppy Joes, catching the sights and any restaurants along the way and then finishing up at Mallory Square for the sunset festivities, where there's another large and busy restaurant. There's a 24 hour parking garage near Bight Marina for $16 that's supposed to include, on and off ground transportation, but don't depend on it.
Also paid street parking by the hour and best on Whitehead St for nearness to Duvall st. and Mallory Square, along with the walking experience, that probably best, if you can hoof it. - Executive45Explorer III
- rv_bill-eExplorerBeyond the facts that Key West is not MH friendly and you really should at least spend the night-----here are a few tips beyond the tourist traps. Pepe's Courtyard on Caroline is a lovely place when weather is nice to sit in the courtyard and drink and eat good food. They do a killer breakfast, love their omelets, but they also do steaks and such.
I don't know of a better light lunch in Key West than than having shrimp salad and Bloody Marys at Rooftop Cafe, right off Duval on Front street.
A great bar and grill for locals is the Hogfish on Stock Island, just before you get to Key West itself. Try the signature Hogfish Sandwich.
The Half Shell Raw Bar on the water at Margaret Street is long standing local institution where I was once a regular and is a great place to eat fresh seafood on the water.
But the best fish I've had in the Keys is at the beginning or end of your journey at the Fish House in Key Largo. Try the fish "Matecumbe Style" and finish with the best Key Lime Pie I've ever had.
Everything that I have mentioned has been around for many years and survived because they are all really good. Have fun! - micpib1ExplorerWe left out from Miami Beach and did it as a day trip in our truck. But I would not do it again. You really need more time to actually see Key West and I would not recommend driving a motorhome around Key West and hopefully you have a Toad to take in the views. JH
- TweeterExplorerWe are driving down from Miami - so day trip will work - can go back again. Thank you guys for your positive replays!
- dewey02Explorer IIRide the Conch Train! :)
- crassterExplorer III don't know if I would take an RV down for just a day trip (unless you are staying over night). I may take my Toyota C but not the TT or Bounder. If I was just going for a day though I'd spend as much time gazing at the water as possible or try to get a boat to take me to dry tortugas. Any way to stay more than just a day?
