How is the grade going up I-50 from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe? I've never been on that highway so I have no idea how steep it is or how tight the curves are. I'd like to tow my boat up there ...

It's not 'I-50'...not an interstate. It's two-lane with a constant climb from Sacramento. It's very doable though.
Another option from Los Angeles is taking CA395 up along the eastern Sierras. It's a beautiful drive with lots of camping spots along the way. This is our favorite.
