In general, I'd say you are unlikely to get bothered if you are driving sensibly and, otherwise, within the law. But here are a few things to consider:
- You are still outside the law. Any LEO who wants to bust you will be within their authority to do so
- There are times where there are concentrated crackdowns on vehicle length. I've heard of this happening in Daytona Beach during the races when some drivers brought long or otherwise non-compliant trailers in.
- In an accident, you will likely be measured.
