In general, I'd say you are unlikely to get bothered if you are driving sensibly and, otherwise, within the law. But here are a few things to consider:

1. You are still outside the law. Any LEO who wants to bust you will be within their authority to do so
2. There are times where there are concentrated crackdowns on vehicle length. I've heard of this happening in Daytona Beach during the races when some drivers brought long or otherwise non-compliant trailers in.
3. In an accident, you will likely be measured.

So there you have it. It's a risk you have to evaluate.
