National Forest Service roads will be difficult to traverse with a 40+ foot RV. NFS campgrounds will be pretty much impossible to access.
We did a lot of national forest campgrounds in California and the other states with our 40'. It is very possible if you do your research. Also, boondocking - a favorite is all along Hwy 395.
Ok I have a tendency to believe what I want to hear but This is a 180 from the above sentence... Woul dthey be difficult from experience, or because it's so big that it woul dbe difficult to make tight turns where there are Trees near the edge of the road?
But, That is good to hear!Ocean Mist wrote:
For us, as I stated, you have to do your research and there are many ways to do this. No, you won't fit into every forest campground but you WILL fit in many throughout the western states. Public campgrounds are always our first choice and honestly, after we've chosen the park, we have never had a problem getting into it. On rare occasions when we weren't 100% sure, we'd park along the highway, disconnect the Jeep and drive through to make sure. We never had to leave after driving through. Our research paid off.
If you have particular forest campgrounds that you want to go, now's the time to check them out before buying.
State parks everywhere else but California, we've had no problems.
Even for national parks such as Yellowstone, Grant Teton, Glacier, Zion, Bryce and many others, we didn't even have reservations for our multiple trips to them. We arrived early morning when folks were checking out. There are always cancellations and in some parks there are even campgrounds that don't even accept reservations, such as Mammoth in Yellowstone and Colter Bay and Gros Ventre in the Tetons. We don't need hookups. In fact, we'd rather not have them because you have better surroundings.
If you know your motorhome capabilities and are a confident driver/parker you'd be able to use those campgrounds, also. However, we wouldn't go over 40'.
