2gypsies - that was my point, anything over 40 feet will seriously limit you in California.
From 32 ft to 40 ft, there is far more availability, but can still limit you - with this, it really depends on your personal preferences.
My opinion, based solely on the OP's wish to camp local lakes, Yosemite, and boondock, is that keeping within the 40 ft limit is the best choice. Anything over that will be a severe restriction. Whether the OP chooses 37ft versus 40ft will have far less impact.
