The issue here in the US is that the emissions (EGR especially) laws destroy so much HP and torque from a diesel that the 3.0 turbo diesel is probably putting out as much power as the Multijet diesels in Europe.
The more recent emission standards in Europe can easily meet the U.S. regulations.
Actually, the latest European regulation (Euro6) is pretty similar to the US standards instituted in.. 2007.
Both U.S. and European emissions regulations for both gas and diesel engines now reach the same near-zero emissions requirement.
