To you naysayers, there is no excuse for these people that try to take advantage of others and it's sad and troubling that some people try to excuse these thieving bad habits of others.
I'm not trying to excuse thieves - I'm simply saying that it might not have been an actual theft and without the facts, I'd rather assume it wasn't.
To say it was OK to "misinterpret" if the site was occupied is total BS. If you have paid for a site, it is occupied until checkout time, or until you checkout, not abandoned at dinner time. If you are there past checkout, fair game, but no other time. We have lost stuff, middle of the day, with two days left on our paid stay, said so right on the post tag. Misinterpret? You bet.
We now leave nothing except an "site occupied" cone with our name on it so they can't use it themselves, and the same for an old entry mat with our name all over it and "site occupied".
Rest assured, that if we came back to our site and found you with our stuff in your hands, you would not need to explain it to us about how it was our fault for leaving our own site. You could do the explaining to the ranger or the sheriff.
