I always notified them too, but I recently got a RBC Visa and when I called to let them know I would be in NYC they said they didn't need to know. Even their website says not to notify them when travelling as they have sophisticated anti-fraud systems making this unnecessary. May be just a matter of time when this is no longer required for any credit cards, at least in Canada where we have fewer and larger financial institutions.
