We set aside two cards every cross country trip just for travel. Those card issuers are always notified of when we plan to leave and when we plan to return .. which in turn suspends denial of the card when used.
We were denied in 2005 and haven't traveled since without calling the card issuers first.
Some card issuers like American Express will let you notify them on their web site, making it easy enough to notify them. Every time we call we're told they WILL deny anything out of the ordinary on your card use. I was told if you never travel, it'll be denied if you try to use it away from home, but ... if you travel full time your pattern is already set to a larger multi-state area and may not be denied.
