We have 3 cards - a BofA Visa, a Chase MC and a Costco Amex. We are fulltimers, and have never been flagged for "out of area". Hope it doesn't happen - we're roaming all the time. I think I recall telling the BofA folk in a passing conversation about something else that we were perpetual travelers with no home area, but AFIK haven't made any similar declarations to the others. What we DO have is notifications on all cards to email us about any transactions over $150 (the usual fuel pump limit) and any transactions for which the card was not present (internet, etc.). Works well for us.
They have some other fraud things in place that have caught and asked that we verify a few charges (and some of them were in fact fraudulent and triggered a card replacement), but so far we haven't been stung or inconvenienced.
