They actually go by your established personal pattern. If you travel/use your card a lot few alarms would be raised.
I know in our case we have one card that we use very little, and almost never when traveling. If/when we do and the transaction is more than a hundred bucks, we get an inquiry from the company.
I for one really appreciate this security measure!
