Virtually all banks now give you the ability to go online and post a vacation or "out of town" schedule on their web site so they can allow for it. Even if you don't have online access, a quick phone call should do it as well. From their point of view, they are fighting fraud and identity theft, not trying to screw up your vacation. Back in the days when you needed the actual piece of plastic to do a transaction, it was different - but now, all you need is the number, and often don't even need the CCD number on back. I'd rather have the bank flag a $500 purchase a thousand miles away from my home, than have to fight them over a stolen number in a month. OTOH, if you contact them and tell them you're on vacation, they should let you continue the charges without getting flagged again 24 hours later.
