Life of surge protector

We about to buy a new motorhome. We have a 10 + Progressive Industries wall mounted surge protector in our current mh. I'm wondering whether or not to take it out of current mh and put in new one or just buy a new one. Do these "wear out" over time? I've heard that the surge protection portion can degrade as it absorbs more " hits", is that true?

Thanks to all who share their knowledge!

  • I'd keep it and put it in the new unit. Progressive guarantees for life (I don't know "whose" live, but for "life"). So if it fails in the new unit, Progressive will make good. Why purchase another one? If it's starting to fail now, why not check and see if they'd make-good now?
  • If I were buying a new MH it would have to include an internal integrated EMS. No deal without it. I think EMS is that important. I have a complete readout of everything in my MH. The internal system is absolutely awesome and worth every penny you pay for it. I was in WA state at an RV park. Employee told me there was nothing wrong with his power outlet. I invited him inside. He looked at my control panel readout and changed out his entire box. The readout tells you how much current each and every ckt in your RV consumes.

Since you have a Progressive Industries EMS unit just call them (919-267-6948) and see what they say. They provide excellent customer service and I've never heard of them steering anyone wrong.

  • I've had a Progressive 30 Amp hardwired one in my MH since March 2006. I've never recorded a surge but have had several low voltages, reverse polarity and open grounds so I'm not too worried about it.

  • that is true, The MOV only can shed some many times.Surge protectors are rated in joules. The higher the better, start at lease 3000 plus. The only last a few years at most. This link is this years rating. About $20+ at amazon.
