It can be done. We picked up an older 24ft Beaver class C for 6k with low miles for that age... First.. Look at it as a car first. Check for leaks/seals/how tight the steering is/u-joints etc and oil spots under it and brakes...
Make sure before you buy that the refer works on both gas and electric and the air conditioner/furnace works/hot water and water pump. See it all with your own eyes, take know ones word for it.
We lived in ours for four years and in that time I replaced the hot water heater and air conditioner and a couple motor things. Take your time and get the floorplan you want and need. Ours was a couch and two chairs and a full back bath..
Think hard on putting a catalytic heater in. You will never regret it. Better than the furnace in every way, especially traveling and boondocking......
