I'm certainly not an expert on antifreeze but from what I understand antifreeze when new has additives in it to protect your cooling system from wear and corrosion, over time these additives wear out and the antifreeze should be replaced when they do. I do remember that you used to be able to get an additive pack that you could add to your antifreeze to restore the additives but don't see anything like that these days.
If someone more knowledgeable wants to speak on this I'd certainly be interested in knowing more.
