I had the same problem. When I took the screen door handle apart (two screws) I found a small rod had broken. I had to buy the handle assembly. It was about 20 dollars.
That small rod is usually the problem. Before it breakes it becomes bent, bowed, enough that it will not push the latch in far enough to release the screen door latch which will cause a hang up or the doors not opening as intended. Pull the screen door handel apart, 2 screws, and make sure the 2 inch pusher rod is completely straight. Most likely the problem. Also, file the manual plastic catch to the screen door on the main door a little so it operates freely when latching and unlatching the two doors.
Why it bends or breakes, who knows?
