The speaker covers are held in by Velcro, but the Velcro holds pretty tightly and so you have to be careful to use a tool that will not mess up the wood. If you use a screwdriver and press sideways it gauges the wood. Use a thin tool and/or put something under the tool to protect the wood.
If you are going to replace the speakers that's a problem. I did it and the wood piece holding the speaker is attached from the front. Its a bear to get it out. If I remember I had to destroy the wood bracket and put in a new piece.
