Loose Injector
Has any one heard of the Cummins 8.3 ISC having a loose injector causing combustion products to enter the return fuel going back to the main tank and causing the fuel to turn black, then clogging filt...

Never heard of a loose injector causing this kind of problem but it almost makes sense. You would assume the carbon is entering the tank through the fuel return line and possibly some blow-by at the injector could cause such a thing. Keep us posted as to what you eventually find.
Have you considered installing a fuel filter on the fuel return line?
come on now, think about it How could/would a loose injecter allow carbon blow by to enter the fuel system ?? impossible
You need to know how it works before coming to a conclusion such as that
in the 8.3 CAPS system the return fuel and the combustion chamber are separated by 1 crush gasket at the bottom of the injector. Soot from the combustion chamber is what makes you oil black, and it will do the same for the fuel.
Ok if u know this is the cause then why not simply replace these gaskets? why would the guys that make the motor not know this? why wait all these thousands of miles and $$$ spent on filters and hours of disconnecting fuel lines and running test lines etc
